Nasdaq Slides as AI Bubble Fears Return
The tech-heavy Nasdaq resumed its recent downturn, falling for the fourth time in five sessions. Investors continued to reassess lofty valuations in artificial intelligence stocks following a series of disappointing earnings reports.
In recent trading, the Nasdaq dropped about 1.1%, while the S&P 500 declined 0.7%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.2%.
Markets React to Labor Data and Energy Developments
On Tuesday, both the Dow Jones and the S&P 500 closed lower for a third straight session after a November jobs report revealed an unexpected rise in the U.S. unemployment rate. Meanwhile, oil prices experienced sharp volatility.
U.S. crude oil briefly fell below $55 per barrel for the first time since early 2021 before rebounding to $56.15 on Wednesday. The recovery followed an announcement that President Donald Trump ordered a blockade on sanctioned oil tankers operating in and out of Venezuela.
Gold Nears Record High as Investors Seek Safety
Gold prices climbed 0.9% to around $4,370 per ounce, putting the precious metal within reach of its all-time high of $4,398 set in October.
The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose to 4.16%, while Bitcoin traded near $86,600, slightly lower on the day. The U.S. Dollar Index edged up 0.2% to 98.32.
Tech Stocks Drag Markets Lower
Shares of Broadcom (AVGO) and Oracle (ORCL) fell nearly 5% each, resuming sharp declines following disappointing quarterly earnings reports.
Nvidia (NVDA), the world’s most valuable public company and a key player in AI chips, dropped about 3.5%. Alphabet (GOOGL), Google’s parent company, declined more than 2%.
Amazon (AMZN) edged slightly higher after a report suggested the company is in talks with OpenAI regarding a potential $10 billion investment and expanded use of Amazon’s AI chips.
Tesla and Other Stocks in Focus
Tesla (TSLA) shares fell 2.5% after reaching a record high the previous session. The stock had recently gained support following comments from CEO Elon Musk, who said the company is testing fully autonomous vehicles in Austin, Texas.
Micron Technology (MU) dropped more than 3% ahead of its earnings announcement, while homebuilder Lennar (LEN) slid about 5% after reporting weaker-than-expected profits and issuing cautious guidance amid a sluggish housing market.
